Champions League Final 2024: Owen Hargreaves and Steve McManaman discuss the ‘risky dark horses’ Dortmund and the determined Real Madrid.
Owen Hargreaves, the former Manchester United and Bayern Munich midfielder, believes that Borussia Dortmund, the “dangerous underdogs,” will pose a significant challenge to Real Madrid. Steve McManaman, on the other hand, believes that Real Madrid is infatuated with the UEFA Champions League.
Hargreaves discussed Dortmund’s performance in the Champions League, where they successfully navigated a difficult group consisting of Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle, and AC Milan. Despite their lackluster league form, Dortmund’s fifth-place finish guarantees them a spot in next season’s competition, regardless of the outcome at Wembley.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Hargreaves emphasized that Dortmund’s strength lies in their collective effort rather than relying on individual star players. He praised their underdog status throughout the tournament and highlighted their victories in Newcastle and Milan. Hargreaves described Dortmund as a complete team that has worked incredibly hard, with exceptionally talented players and a strong work ethic. He concluded that while they may be underdogs, they are dangerous underdogs.
McManaman, who had successful spells with Manchester City, Liverpool, and Real Madrid, highlighted Real Madrid’s obsession with the Champions League. He explained that while their domestic success in La Liga is almost guaranteed, it is the Champions League trophy that holds a special place in their hearts. McManaman emphasized Real Madrid’s history and their 14 Champions League titles. He stated that winning the Champions League title would be a significant achievement for young talents like Jude Bellingham.
