Casemiro: Manchester United player discusses challenges faced in current season
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has admitted that he has been losing sleep over the team’s inconsistent form this season. The club has had a turbulent campaign, being eliminated from Europe in December after finishing last in their Champions League group.
Currently sitting in sixth place in the Premier League, United find themselves 11 points behind the top four, which would secure qualification for next season’s Champions League. This lack of contention for major honours in the latter stages of the season has been difficult for Casemiro to accept.
“It’s difficult. This is the point that bothers me most about not fighting for titles,” Casemiro told ESPN Brazil. “Being 20 points behind first place. Sometimes, I can’t even sleep to try to think about doing something different. It’s reality. There’s no point in thinking about title or Champions League places, we need to think about today’s games.”
Casemiro emphasized the importance of focusing on the present and taking each game as it comes. He expressed disappointment in the team’s recent results, where they missed out on potential nine points by only securing two. The midfielder stressed the need to concentrate on the upcoming match against Bournemouth.
In recent matches, Casemiro played a part in United’s thrilling 2-2 draw against Liverpool, as well as the 1-1 draw against Brentford and the dramatic 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, where the team dropped points from winning positions.
United’s only chance of silverware this season lies in the FA Cup, where they will face Coventry in the semi-finals later this month. A potential final against Manchester City or Chelsea awaits them in May.
Reflecting on the draw against Liverpool, Casemiro expressed satisfaction with the team’s recovery from a poor first-half performance and expressed hope for improvement in the future.
“The game against Liverpool was very fast-paced and well played,” he said. “We were playing against one of the leaders of the competition and who is going through a good moment. We responded well. Both teams had opportunities. The game was good. At home we are strong, but we played against a great team. We have to think about the next match.”
