Cameroon secures advancement in the Africa Cup of Nations as Christopher Wooh’s last-minute goal propels them forward, while Angola claims the leading position in Group D.

Cameroon secured a thrilling victory over Gambia to advance to the knock-out stages of the Africa Cup of Nations in dramatic fashion. Christopher Wooh’s injury-time goal sealed a 3-2 win for Rigobert Song’s side, who had only managed to pick up one point from their first two matches. The victory was crucial for Cameroon, as they needed a win to have any hope of progressing to the last 16.

The match started well for Cameroon when Karl Toko Ekambi scored to give them a 1-0 lead just before the hour mark. However, Gambia fought back with goals from Ablie Jallow and Ebrima Colley, putting them on the verge of a shock victory and a place in the knock-out stages as one of the best third-placed finishers.

Cameroon’s hopes were revived when James Gomez scored an own goal to make it 2-2 in the dying minutes of the game. And then, in the 91st minute, Wooh rose highest to head home a corner, sparking scenes of celebration on the Cameroon bench. The win, combined with Senegal’s victory over Guinea, secured Cameroon second place in Group C and kept their dreams of a sixth Africa Cup of Nations title alive.

“I am proud of my players,” said Song. “I would like to congratulate them for this performance. They showed patriotism and fighting spirit.” Cameroon will now face Nigeria in the quarter-finals on Saturday, January 27.

In another match, Angola confirmed their place in the knock-out stages of the tournament for the first time since hosting it in 2010. Pedro Goncalves’ side secured top spot in Group D with a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso. Jó Paciência’s first-half goal gave Angola a 1-0 lead, and Zini’s injury-time strike sealed the win. Angola will now face one of the best third-placed teams in the last 16.

Overall, it was a thrilling day of football in the Africa Cup of Nations, with both Cameroon and Angola securing their places in the knock-out stages in dramatic fashion.
