Cabo Verde and Egypt were tied 2-2 in a surprising turn of events as the Pharaohs were shocked by a late equalizer in the 99th minute. However, it is worth noting that both teams have secured their places in the last 16.
Cape Verde’s forward #19 Bryan Teixeira (C) celebrated with his teammates after scoring his team’s second goal during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2024 group B football match against Egypt at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. It was a night of crazy drama in Group B as Egypt managed to sneak into the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.
In the other Group B game, there were four injury-time goals, with Mozambique scoring twice to draw 2-2 with Ghana. This meant that a draw was enough for Egypt to finish second and qualify for the next round. However, many of the Egyptian players were unaware of the Ghana score and were crestfallen when Cabo Verde equalised in the 99th minute.
Despite dominating the first half, Egypt found themselves behind to a clinical finish from Gilson Tavares just before the break. However, the half-time substitute Trezeguet quickly equalised with a beautifully worked goal, giving Egypt hope of securing a victory that would guarantee their place in the knockout stages.
In the 91st minute, Mostafa Mohamed calmly lobbed the ball over Vozinha, giving Egypt what they believed to be the winning goal. However, there was a VAR check for handball against Mohamed, leading the referee to review the footage before ultimately awarding the goal.
At this point, some of the Egypt players were on the verge of tears, fearing that their hard-fought victory would be taken away from them. Their fears were compounded when Bryan Teixeira scored a nonchalant equaliser. However, the final whistle brought confirmation of Ghana’s result, bringing immense relief to the Egyptian team.
It was a night of intense emotions and nail-biting moments, but in the end, Egypt managed to secure their place in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.
