Brentford’s Yoane Wissa finds the back of the net while the Democratic Republic of Congo faces a draw against Zambia at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Zambia’s defender #23 Rodrick Kabwe put up a strong fight for the ball against DR Congo’s midfielder #14 Gael Kakuta and DR Congo’s defender #24 Gedeon Kalulu during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2024 group F football match between DR Congo and Zambia at Stad.
In a disappointing start to their Africa Cup of Nations campaign, the Democratic Republic of Congo were unable to secure a victory as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Zambia in their opening match in Group F. Despite their dominance throughout the game, the two-time champions were wasteful in front of goal, with only one of their 24 shooting opportunities finding the back of the net.
Under the guidance of manager Sebastien Desabre, who led his team to a position 15 places higher than their opponents in the FIFA world rankings, DR Congo took control of the game from the very beginning. Former Chelsea midfielder Gael Kakuta proved to be a constant threat, although he squandered a couple of chances.
However, it was Zambia, managed by former Chelsea boss Avram Grant, who took the lead in the middle of the first half. Kings Kangwa displayed intelligence and skill as he converted from 25 yards, taking advantage of Lionel Mpasi being off his line. Mpasi had rushed out of his area to tackle Patson Daka, and while he was still getting to his feet, a quick throw-in was taken, resulting in Kangwa’s goal.
The Democratic Republic of Congo quickly responded, equalizing through Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, who tapped home from close range after receiving a slide pass from Cedric Bakambu. They came close to taking the lead moments later, but another effort was cleared off the line.
Bakambu had a chance of his own after the break, but he blazed over the bar from inside the box. Arthur Masuaku also had a shot saved. The second half was filled with opportunities for the Leopards, who believed they had earned a penalty when Tandi Mwape was penalized for a handball in the area. However, VAR overturned the decision.
Wissa, Theo Bongonda, and Simon Banza all had chances to score, but failed to convert. In injury time, Silas Katompa Mvumpa had an open net but scooped the ball over, leaving DR Congo to settle for a single point.
Overall, it was a frustrating result for the Democratic Republic of Congo, who will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they hope to progress in the tournament.
