Bayer Leverkusen defeated West Ham 2-0 with late goals from Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface, giving the German team the upper hand in the Europa League.
Bayer Leverkusen asserted their dominance in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash against West Ham United, securing a 2-0 victory with two late goals at BayArena. The Hammers put up a strong fight, but were unable to withstand the pressure from Leverkusen’s substitutes, Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface.
In the early stages of the match, West Ham found themselves on the back foot. However, they had a golden opportunity in the 10th minute when Michail Antonio launched a counterattack and set up Mohammed Kudus. Unfortunately for the Hammers, Kudus’ shot lacked power and was easily saved by Matej Kovar.
Leverkusen, on the other hand, were relentless in their pursuit of a goal. Lukasz Fabianski, West Ham’s goalkeeper, made a series of impressive saves to deny Alex Grimaldo, Patrik Schick, and Edmond Tapsoba. Fabianski’s heroics kept the visitors in the game.
After the break, Leverkusen continued to threaten West Ham’s defense. Fabianski once again showcased his skills with a remarkable reflex save to tip Schick’s header over the crossbar in the 70th minute. However, Fabianski’s efforts were in vain as Leverkusen finally found the breakthrough in the 83rd minute.
Hofmann’s volley pierced through the crowded six-yard box, leaving Fabianski unsighted and unable to make a save. The goal broke the deadlock and gave Leverkusen the lead. In stoppage time, Hofmann turned provider, delivering a perfect cross that Boniface expertly headed into the net, further extending Leverkusen’s advantage.
With this victory, Xabi Alonso’s side now holds the upper hand heading into the second leg at the London Stadium next week. West Ham will need to regroup and come up with a plan to overturn the deficit if they want to progress in the competition.
