Barcelona’s Xavi and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are calling for the implementation of goal-line technology following a ‘humiliating’ incident during El Clasico.

In a thrilling LaLiga clash between Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona, it was the controversial VAR ruling that stole the headlines. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen expressed his frustration at the decision, labeling it “embarrassing” for football. The ruling determined that Andriy Lunin had prevented Lamine Yamal’s shot from crossing the line at 1-1. Los Blancos ultimately secured a 3-2 victory, extending their lead at the top of the table to 11 points.

Ter Stegen did not hold back in his criticism, stating, “I can’t find the words to explain what happened on the goal line. It’s embarrassing for football. There is a lot of money in this industry, but not for what is important. I don’t understand how there cannot be money to implement the technology that other leagues have.”

Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi, echoed Ter Stegen’s sentiments in his post-match press conference. He described the lack of goal-line technology as “embarrassing” and emphasized the need for it in order to maintain the league’s status as the best in the world. Xavi also expressed his frustration with the referee’s decisions, stating, “The feeling today is of complete injustice.”

Despite the defeat, Xavi was proud of his team’s performance, particularly in the second half. He praised their efforts and believed they deserved to win based on their overall display. However, Xavi acknowledged that the title race is now practically over, with Real Madrid’s impressive form throughout the season.

The match itself saw Barcelona take the lead twice through goals from Andreas Christensen and Fermin Lopez. However, Real Madrid fought back with a goal from Lucas Vazquez and a stoppage-time strike from Jude Bellingham, following Vinicius Junior’s penalty in the 18th minute.

In the end, it was Real Madrid who emerged victorious, securing three crucial points and further solidifying their position at the top of the table. As for Barcelona, they were left to rue the controversial VAR ruling and reflect on what could have been.
