Barcelona’s captain, who has won the Ballon d’Or twice, has agreed to a new two-year contract with the Liga F club.

Alexia Putellas, the sensational two-time Ballon d’Or winner, has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal with Barcelona, much to the delight of the club and its fans. The announcement was made on Tuesday, confirming that Putellas will remain with the Catalan giants until at least 2026, with the option to extend for a further year.

The 30-year-old midfield maestro had reportedly received tempting offers from the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), but she turned them down in favor of continuing her illustrious career at Barcelona. This decision showcases her unwavering loyalty and dedication to the club that has nurtured her talent.

However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for Putellas this season. Just before the highly anticipated Euro 2022, she suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which forced her to undergo keyhole surgery on her left knee in December. This setback kept her out of action for three long months, but she has shown incredible resilience and determination in her recovery.

Despite the injury setback, Putellas has already etched her name in Barcelona’s history books. As the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with an impressive tally of 189 goals, she has played an instrumental role in their success. With an astonishing 29 major trophies to her name, including the UEFA Women’s Champions League and eight Liga F titles, Putellas has proven time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned with.

In fact, it was in the 2021 edition of the UEFA Women’s Champions League that Putellas truly shone. She finished as Barcelona’s top goalscorer in the tournament, helping the team secure their first-ever title in the competition. Now, with the Champions League final against Lyon looming on May 25, Putellas has the opportunity to add yet another trophy to her already impressive collection.

With 424 appearances for Barcelona, Putellas has firmly established herself as a key figure in the club’s history. She currently sits in third place for the most appearances, behind only Melanie Serrano (517) and Mara Torrejon (431). This is a testament to her longevity and consistency at the highest level of the game.

As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on Putellas and Barcelona as they aim to conquer Europe once again. If they can emerge victorious in the Champions League final, Putellas will have the chance to lift her 30th trophy with the club, further solidifying her status as one of Barcelona’s greatest ever players.

In signing this new contract, Alexia Putellas has not only secured her own future but has also sent a powerful message to the footballing world. She is committed to Barcelona, and her unwavering loyalty and exceptional talent will undoubtedly continue to inspire her teammates and fans alike.
