Barcelona secures a dramatic victory in their comeback against Las Palmas with Ilkay Gundogan’s last-minute penalty, elevating their chances of claiming the La Liga title.
Xavi, the former Barcelona player and current manager, has admitted that the club is not in a privileged financial situation to consider signing Kylian Mbappe. This comes after Barcelona’s uninspired performance against Las Palmas, where they were outplayed for much of the match.
Barcelona struggled in the first half and found themselves behind when Munir El Haddadi scored after beating the goalkeeper to a loose ball. Las Palmas came close to doubling their lead when Sandro hit the post just before half-time.
However, Xavi’s team talk during the break seemed to have the desired effect, as Barcelona came out in the second half with more focus and clinicality. Ferran Torres equalized for Barcelona just 10 minutes into the second half, although there was an element of luck involved.
The decisive moment of the match came in injury time when Ilkay Gundogan was fouled in the penalty area, earning Barcelona a spot-kick. Gundogan stepped up and converted the penalty, securing victory for his side.
Barcelona’s new signing, Vitor Roque, made his debut as a substitute, replacing the underperforming Robert Lewandowski. However, Xavi was dealt another blow when Joao Cancelo had to be substituted early on due to a knee injury.
Despite the victory, Barcelona’s performance raised concerns, and Xavi acknowledged that the club’s financial situation may hinder their ability to make big signings like Mbappe. Barcelona currently sit seven points behind league leaders Real Madrid and Girona.
