Atleti maintain their lead going into the second leg of the quarter-finals.
Samuel Lino of Atletico Madrid sent the Wanda Metropolitano into raptures as he celebrated scoring his team’s second goal alongside teammates Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul. The UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg match between Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund was a thrilling encounter, with the home side emerging victorious with a 2-1 win.
Atletico Madrid got off to the perfect start, capitalizing on a nervous and error-ridden Borussia Dortmund side. The hosts displayed an uncharacteristically aggressive press from the beginning, feeding off the energy of their passionate supporters. Within five minutes, Rodrigo De Paul seized upon a loose pass from Ian Maatsen and coolly slotted the ball into the net, giving Atletico the early advantage.
The lead was doubled just after the half-hour mark, with Samuel Lino finding the back of the net. The goal came from a well-executed sweeping move that originated from a long throw by Nahuel Molina. Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck, the Dortmund centre-backs, found themselves in a tangle, allowing Alvaro Morata to poke the ball into the path of Antoine Griezmann. Griezmann then played a delicate scooped pass to Lino, who calmly finished the chance.
Dortmund managed to halve the deficit with just 10 minutes remaining on the clock. Substitute Julian Brandt combined with Sebastien Haller, with Brandt’s clever pass finding Haller, who swiftly turned and fired the ball into the bottom corner.
The German side continued to push for an equalizer, and young English forward Jamie Bynoe-Gittens came close with a powerful left-footed strike that grazed off the head of Cesar Azpilicueta and hit the crossbar.
However, Atletico Madrid, known for their resilience, managed to hold on to their lead. They will now travel to Dortmund with a slender advantage, aiming to secure their spot in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
