Adam Wharton describes his selection for England’s Euro 2024 squad as ‘unbelievable’ and a ‘realization of a lifelong dream’ before the tournament.
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has expressed his surprise at being included in England’s Euro 2024 squad, describing it as a “dream come true”. The 20-year-old has experienced a rapid rise in his career, going from making his professional debut just two years ago to becoming a key player for Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Wharton’s impressive performances in midfield earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad, and he made his England debut in a 3-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Now, he has the opportunity to feature in his first major tournament after being named in the final 26-man squad for Euro 2024 in Germany.
Speaking ahead of England’s opening match against Serbia, Wharton expressed his disbelief at his call-up, stating, “It’s a surreal feeling. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. Just a dream come true. Every kid who grows up playing football wants to play in the Premier League, play for their country.”
Wharton also reflected on his journey so far, from playing for his boyhood club Blackburn Rovers to making the move to Crystal Palace in the Premier League. He emphasized his enjoyment of the past six months and his desire to continue playing and improving.
The young midfielder acknowledged that his England call-up was a pleasant surprise after his first season in the top flight with Crystal Palace. He expressed his delight at the opportunity to showcase his skills on the biggest stage, stating, “I am absolutely delighted. I get to do what I love on the top stage – you can’t beat it.”
Wharton has already made a positive impression on his teammates and the coaching staff during his time with the national squad. In his debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina, he achieved a 100% pass completion rate. However, he remains focused on further development and learning from more experienced players like Declan Rice.
Wharton is part of a group of young talents in Southgate’s squad, including Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. He believes that the combination of youth and experience in the team will be beneficial as England aims to win the Euros.
“There are still players that have been in the team for a long time and some top young players in the team,” Wharton said. “I think it’s good to have that little mix. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough.”
With his unexpected inclusion in the England squad, Wharton is eager to make the most of this opportunity and continue his impressive rise in the world of football.
