According to Steve Sidwell, Jose Mourinho might explore a different approach in his career by considering an international move following his departure from Roma.

Jose Mourinho’s departure from Roma has left many wondering what the future holds for the Portuguese coach. Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell believes that Mourinho could be tempted to “try something new” and move into international management.

Mourinho was sacked by Roma after a disappointing season that saw the team slump to ninth place in Serie A. Despite winning the UEFA Europa Conference League, Mourinho was unable to build on that success and secure a Champions League spot.

Speculation has been rife about Mourinho’s next move. He has previously been linked with the Portugal job, a move he reportedly turned down while at Roma. There has also been talk of a switch to the Saudi Pro League.

Sidwell, who played under Mourinho at Chelsea, suggests that now in the twilight of his career, Mourinho might be looking for a change of pace. Sidwell said, “Jose leaving Roma was a bit of a shock. But nothing surprises me in football. He’d done a great job there, certainly brought a lot of passion from the fans and connection to the players.”

Sidwell believes that Mourinho could be interested in a national coaching role. He still sees the hunger and passion in Mourinho, as well as the desire for more trophies. Sidwell thinks that Mourinho’s love for the day-to-day management and training sessions could make international management a good fit for him.

“I think the day-to-day suits him, that’s where he comes alive in sessions. The clipboard comes out, it’s always enjoyable. That hunger, that desire, burn that he’s got to do that day in, day out. I’m sure he’s got offers but I think he might try something new and he’s not getting any younger, so I think he could go in that direction.”

Currently, Portugal’s national team is managed by Roberto Martinez, who took over from Fernando Santos in 2023. Mourinho has never managed an international team before, but it could be the next challenge he takes on in his illustrious career.
